Seminar on Regional Development Features the Presence of the Minister of Economy

INTRODUCTION

On Friday, July 28th, the University of Évora and the Antonio Pargana Foundation organized a seminar dedicated to the theme "Building Economic Development from the Interior: Attracting and Retaining Talent."

The event, attended by the Minister of Economy, Pedro Reis, brought together leaders from public and private entities, entrepreneurs, and academics to discuss ways to retain young talent in the interior of the country, particularly in the Alentejo, thus contributing to regional and national economic growth.

The opening session was led by the Rector of the University of Évora, Hermínia Vasconcelos Vilar, and the President of the António Pargana Foundation, António Pargana. The program continued with a panel discussion on "Entrepreneurship and Innovation from the Interior," featuring reflections from João Nabeiro, President of the Nabeiro Group, and Soumodip Sarkar, CEO of the Alentejo Science and Technology Park (PACT).
"The Economic Growth of Businesses in Alentejo: Challenges for Attracting and Retaining Talent" was the topic of the next discussion, a roundtable moderated by Bernardo Ivo Cruz from the António Pargana Foundation.

At the end of the session, a cooperation agreement was signed between the University of Évora and the António Pargana Foundation, aiming to develop training initiatives that enhance knowledge of contemporary Portugal and, through this, strengthen the connection between Portugal and students from the diaspora.

The seminar took place on Friday, June 28, 2024, at 10 a.m. in the Teachers' Room of the Colégio do Espírito Santo in Évora.

“No company can grow if the people within the company don't grow. We have to get academia involved in talent spotting and talent management. The role of the António Pargana Foundation is fundamental here.”

About the Antonio Pargana Foundation

Set up in October 2023 and awaiting recognition from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Antonio Pargana Foundation aims to help strengthen ties between Portugal and the Diaspora, in particular with students with hereditary or emotional ties to the country.

The main objective of its work is to strengthen the link between Portugal and the Diaspora through greater mutual knowledge. Direct beneficiaries of the AP Foundation's action, Portuguese descendants and Portuguese speakers will have the opportunity to create different connections with the reality of contemporary Portugal, through programs made available by FAP's partner universities.

These programs, organized with the support of public and private institutions, companies and other entities that want to be associated with this mission, should be an added value for the young people who attend them and who, through direct contact with the business fabric, cultural, political and other institutions, create or strengthen their connection to Portugal.

About the University of Évora

The University of Évora was the second university to be founded in Portugal, in 1559. After 200 years, its activity was interrupted by the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from Portugal in 1759. It was re-established in 1973 with the creation of the University Institute of Évora (IUE), which led to the refounding of the University of Évora in 1979.

The University teaches a total of 41 Bachelor's and Master's degree courses, 65 Master's degree courses and 31 PhDs, as well as offering multiple short courses (micro-credentials). Covering a broad spectrum of knowledge, it includes the Schools of Arts, Social Sciences, Sciences and Technology, Health and Human Development, and Nursing.  Through the Institute for Research and Advanced Training, it promotes coordination between the doctoral programs and its 19 Research Units, fostering a close link between teaching and scientific research.

The University of Évora sees itself in relation to the region in which it is located, the Alentejo, choosing it as the preferred target of its efforts to socialize knowledge, to the European Community with which it shares identical human, cultural and scientific values, to neighbouring regions with which it has been establishing strategic partnerships as a priority, and to the Portuguese-speaking countries to which it seeks to extend its mission, while not forgetting that the preparation of students must always take into account the global “world” in which we live today. Inter-institutional cooperation is therefore a priority, which takes the form of participation in various national and international networks, in particular the Mobilizing Agendas and the Alliance of European Universities in the area of sustainability - EU GREEN.
